English Language Proficiency Requirement for J-1 Exchange Visitors
The U.S. Department of State published new regulations that are effective January 5, 2015. All new international scholars in the J-1 immigration classification are required to demonstrate English proficiency through an objective measurement of English language proficiency before a Form DS-2019 can be issued. This new policy impacts prospective J-1 scholars (short-term scholars, research scholars, professors, specialists and a small group of non-degree students).
NOTE: Prospective J-1 students will fulfill this requirement through Admissions with an English language test as required by UNL Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Office of Graduate Admissions. In certain limited circumstances, the UNL Office of Undergraduate Admissions waives the English Language Test Requirement. If Admissions waives the English Language test for a student then the procedure below would need to be completed for the student.
Prospective J-1 scholars (Research Scholars, Professors, and Short Term Scholars) fulfill the English requirement through one of the approved measurement types listed on the English Proficiency form.
